The Douro is one of the portuguese’s most wild and rugged territory, carved on the valleys of the River Douro and its poor soils of schist. At no other site of Portugal the human intervention in the landscape is so obvious, visible in thousands of terraces across the region, defying gravity from the steep slopes where the vineyards are located. For it’s beauty and grandeur, the region was recognized by UNESCO as “World Heritage”.
Port wine is born in Douro and is one of the most renowned Portuguese wines, giving great international recognition to the other wines, that have gained a lot of quality and have been internacionaly awarded.
The best Port wine is made in the most arid hillsides and nearby the river, while table wines are produced on the lower and fresh slopes.
